So last night, at about half past eight, I check my facebook. I was at a thing at a hotel, and the booze seemed to be drying up. Lo and behold, I see that The Dollfins (previous review here - http://www.varsitynewspaper.co.za/features/757-dollfinspurpleturtle) are playing a wee gig with Make-Overs at a place called Ragazzi Lounge. Where? Just above Strand Street, on your left, you'll see a shop selling all sorts of Africa-stuff not unlike the merchandise on Green Market Square. Go in. Walk. Go upstairs. I didn't know either.
The Dollfins, as you should well know by now, rock. Despite playing an admittedly sub-standard set last night, they rock. They thought they were shit. The audience either didn't notice or didn't care. They're electrifying. A quote from bassist Bear Trap: "Some vaginas blow bubbles, some vaginas throw darts, but these vaginas play guitars."
I'm not sure either, but how can you argue with anything so unabashedly rock and roll?
Next up was a band I had never heard of, but wish I had. Make-Overs blew me away. I was sitting down when they started, so I couldn't see the band. I assumed there were four people. At least three. When I got up to have a look, I couldn't believe it. Two people. And the drummer is a girl. And if she weighs more than 46 kilos, I'll eat my shoe.
They reminded me of Placebo, Nirvana, and early Foo Fighters. And Desmond and the Tutus. And the Great Apes. And Band of Skulls. Their sound, however, is not just a mish-mash of these bands, though - not that I'm sure that's possible. The guitarist does very cool stuff - like using a loop of himself playing to provide a backdrop over which to play more - and, as an added bonus, looks like Brian Jones, circa 1969.
These guys just generate insane amounts of noise and, like The Dollfins, they should become huge. They're here from Pretoria for a while, so check them out.
See The Dollfins, Make-Overs and Dead Lucky tonight (02/12) at The Jolly Roger in Plumstead.
