UCT Consulting Club Kicks-off

Stafford Masie, Google’s first country manager for South Africa, addressed UCT students at the UCT Consulting Club’s opening event on Wednesday, March 11th.

Masie has been in the IT industry for approximately 20 years, holding numerous roles throughout his career. In addition to being country manager for Google SA, he provides many of Africa’s top firms with advice on how to take their businesses further.

Masie’s address was centred on technology and innovation, and how they have the ability to create abundance. He spoke of how the scarcities of the world could be transformed into abundance through technology and innovation.

He suggested that the business world is moving in a direction where “platforms for augmentation” will flourish as opposed to the traditional market of providing goods and services. These “platforms” would promote the integration of technologies and “create a market-place for third-party innovation to take place”.

Sean Rivett, president and co-founder of the UCT Consulting Club, had the following to say about the talk: “Mr. Masie's approach to innovation and technology is nothing short of mind-blowing”. This talk is the first of a series of talks being hosted by the UCT Consulting Club in their inaugural year.

“The primary goal is to create a vital link between students and consulting firms. This has been done by pooling talented individuals from UCT and organising events that give them a chance for meaningful interaction with industry leaders.” Adrian Cox, vice-president and co-founder of the UCT Consulting Club.

In addition to the talks, the Club offers members the unique opportunity to interact with industry through hosting case coaching workshops, social consulting projects in partnership with Siyaya UCT and hosting case study competitions.

The UCT Consulting Club offers UCT students from all faculties a refreshingly new take on innovation and learning. To apply to be a member or for more information on the Club and its events visit www.uctconsultingclub.com.
