Saturday 14 October saw the end of discussions at the University Council meeting over the increase in university fees.
Discussions between the SRC and UCT management over the increase in fees began in August. UCT management proposed a 10.5% increase, whilst the SRC proposed a 6.66% increase in fees.
The council has agreed on a 9.8% increase in fees for 2012. The increase decision was made after proposals from both the SRC and management were discussed. The council also took into account the proposed increase in fees at other universities.
The fee increases do not affect those who are on financial aid, but will remain the same as the 2011 fees. Sean Darge, Secretary General of the 2011 SRC said, ‘we commend Council and Management for recognising the importance of protecting these students.’
The council meeting also took the decision to increase resident fees by 8.5% and an extra fee increase of 4% for Law students to fund the Law Clinic.
