Love sucks, but does it really?

All around the world people celebrate the day of February 14th as the universal day of love. Roses, chocolates, balloons and heart-shaped candy flood the stores and mail boxes of those fortunate enough to land themselves a Valentine.

However, for those (of us) unlucky in love, or sick of all the gushing romance, there is enough happening for us to keep entertained. Making a strong anti-valentines day statement, 5FM is holding their annual Love Sucks Affair at the Old Biscuit Mill. By attempting to break the world record for speed dating, they are showing us that there is much more to February 14th than everlasting love.

While an event of this nature threatens to dismantle the red glow of Cape Town couples love, isn’t it ironic that dating of any kind, even if it is just for a few seconds, could ultimately end up in more soppy shows of affection come next Valentines Day? It seems that in the end, much to our dismay, we’re all just rooting for the same cause; to the one.
